Carotid stenting is a procedure that opens blocked arteries to restore blood flow to the brain. They are often performed to treat or prevent strokes.
The carotid arteries are located on either side of your neck. These are the main arteries that supply blood to the brain. They can become clogged with fatty deposits (plaque) that reduce or block blood flow to the brain. This condition is called carotid artery disease and can lead to a stroke.
In this procedure, a small balloon is inserted into the blocked artery and temporarily inflated to widen the area so blood can flow freely to the brain.
