During a procedure known as "flow diversion," your surgeon inserts a stent—a flexible, soft mesh tube—into the blood channel where the aneurysm originated using a catheter. The blood flow is instantly diverted away from the aneurysm by this procedure. Blood flow is redirected to relieve pressure on the aneurysm and reduce the risk of rupture. Over time, the stent's growing new cells close the aneurysm and repair the vessel. There is little chance that the stent will cut off blood flow to other parts of the brain if it covers the opening of a branch that leaves the channel because normal blood flow prevents cells from growing on that part of the stent and obstructing the branch.
