A brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a tangle of blood vessels in the brain that connects arteries and veins. The arteries are responsible for transporting oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain. The oxygen-depleted blood is returned to the lungs and heart via veins. An AVM in the brain impairs this critical mechanism. An arteriovenous malformation can occur anywhere in the body, but the most common places are the brain and spinal cord – while brain AVMs are uncommon in general. The cause of brain AVMs is unknown. They are present in the majority of people from birth, but they can develop later in life. They are rarely passed down through families.
