The arteries carry the heart's blood, which is enriched in oxygen, to the brain. Through veins, the blood that has lost its oxygen is restored to the heart and lungs. A brain AVM interferes with this important operation. Although the brain and spinal cord are popular places for arteriovenous malformations to develop, brain AVMs are very rare. Malformations of the aorta and veins can develop everywhere in the body. Brain AVMs have no recognized cause. They are normally present at birth, though they may develop later in life. Families may occasionally pass them on. Some persons may get seizures or headaches as a result of a brain AVM. An AVM is frequently found during a brain scan for another medical purpose or when blood vessels rupture and bleed (hemorrhage).
