A minimally invasive treatment called carotid stenting is used to treat carotid artery disease, which is characterized by plaque accumulation that narrows the carotid arteries. These arteries, which are found on either side of the neck, provide the brain with blood that is high in oxygen. The risk of stroke may rise if they thin or become clogged. A small incision, usually made in the groin area, is used to insert a thin, flexible tube called a catheter into the damaged artery during carotid stenting. The sophisticated imaging techniques are employed to guide the catheter to the location of the obstruction. Once in place, a stent—a small, mesh-like device—is inflated and put through the catheter to widen the constricted artery and bring blood flow back to the brain.
